Major Sponsor Cathy Barcomb and crew did their Virtual 5K at the BHS Track at Van Detta Stadium!

The Arc of Genesee Orleans and The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming joined forces for their 5K events this year, offering the 2020 VIRTUAL Friends & Family 5K.

Sandy Konfederath, Race Director, said event participants and sponsors registered from as far away as Houston, Texas to Oakland, California and Las Vegas, Nevada. “The idea behind the virtual event was to give people in any city, town or state a chance to participate on a route, day and time of their choice – it was quite successful,” she said.

According to Arc Director of Development & Community Relations, Shelley Falitico, sponsor support has been amazing as well. Crickler Vending and MTE Turf were at the top of the sponsor board, companies owned and operated by the Houseknechts of Batavia. “The Houseknecht family has been a longtime friend of the Arc and believes in our mission of helping individuals with disabilities and their families,” Falitico shared. “Their commitment spans three generations, and we are so thankful,” she added. On Saturday, a 5K celebration event was held at the Arc Community Center on Woodrow Road in Batavia. The challenge in planning the gathering was ensuring compliance with guidelines related to masks, social distancing and limiting crowd size.

First stop for celebration attendees was the hand sanitizing station, followed by check in and t-shirt pickup. A short neighborhood walk concluded on the opposite side of the property, with “fun walkers” accessing the boxed lunch pick up via the Notre Dame High School sidewalk off Union Street. Lunch, courtesy of T.F. Browns, Case-Nic Cookies and WBTA was ready and waiting. The popular last stop – was a “Taste of the Country” where participants had a chance to take home a prepackaged bag of homegrown produce donated by area farmers and growers.

“As our first community fund raising event of 2020 – it was perfect,” Falitico said. Arc of Genesee Orleans had to cancel their two golf tournaments this year due to the pandemic. “We set a goal of $25,000.00 for the 5K this year, and are about $3,500.00 shy of that goal. If you want to help us reach that goal, secure online donations can be made at https://www.arcgo.org/donate and note “5K” in the comments section.

“Our Virtual 5K is in memory of Mary Anne Graney, Terri Carr Krieger and Ramon Rocha, three individuals who made a huge difference to our two Arc Chapters, sponsoring the event,” Race Director Sandy Konfederath said. “On the Genesee Orleans side, funds benefit programs and services and the Mary Anne Graney Memorial Scholarship. We were pleased that one of the 2020 scholarship winners, Karlie Stymus, joined us as a volunteer today!”
